“Calder. Rêver en équilibre”

To mark the 100th anniversary of Alexander Calder’s arrival in Paris and the 50th anniversary of his passing, the Fondation Louis Vuitton presents an exceptional exhibition: “Calder. Dreaming in Balance.” This major retrospective pays tribute to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and explores his entire body of work, from his early days in Paris to the monumental sculptures that redefined modern art.

Set within the iconic architectural setting designed by Frank Gehry, the exhibition transforms the visit into a true sensory experience where Calder’s famous mobiles seem to float in space.

A visionary sculptor, Alexander Calder revolutionized art history by introducing movement as an essential component of sculpture. His famous mobiles and stabiles explore fundamental concepts such as balance, gravity, light, and space.

The exhibition brings together nearly 300 works, offering an exceptional overview of his oeuvre: wire sculptures, paintings, drawings, sculptural jewelry, and monumental installations. Each piece illustrates Calder’s constant exploration of movement and harmony.

Conceived as a chronological and immersive journey, the exhibition highlights the major milestones of the artist’s career:

  • His early work with *Cirque Calder*, an iconic piece that captivated the Parisian avant-garde in the 1920s
  • The emergence of his first mobiles, true sculptures in motion
  • The large-scale monumental works of the 1960s and 1970s
  • The late works, where abstraction and lightness reach their peak

The suspended mobiles interact with the building’s architecture, creating a sense of perpetual motion and visual poetry.
