The museum of Monnaie de Paris

Located on the banks of the Seine, across from the Louvre Museum, the Monnaie de Paris is one of the capital’s most iconic cultural and historical landmarks. Just a few minutes’ walk from Île Saint-Louis and the Hôtel du Jeu de Paume, it is a must-see during any visit to Paris.

Founded in 864 by King Charles the Bald, the Monnaie de Paris is considered the oldest French institution still in operation and one of the oldest companies in the world. Historically responsible for minting French coins, it continues today to produce coins, medals, and works of art.

Housed since 1775 in the Hôtel de la Monnaie at 11 Quai de Conti, the institution occupies a remarkable neoclassical building designed by architect Jacques-Denis Antoine. This impressive monument is an integral part of Paris’s architectural heritage.

Today, the Monnaie de Paris is no longer limited to its industrial function. It has become a true cultural hub, blending heritage, exhibitions, and artisanal craftsmanship.

The site features, among other things:

  • a museum dedicated to the history of currency and minting techniques
  • active art studios
  • temporary exhibitions
  • a shop selling original creations and collectible items
  • a gourmet restaurant

The Hôtel de la Monnaie is a masterpiece of the Neoclassical style. Its imposing façade runs along the Seine and offers a direct view of the opposite bank and the Louvre. Inside, the building features a majestic courtyard and spaces that have been completely renovated as part of the “Métalmorphoses” transformation project.

Getting to the Monnaie de Paris from the Hôtel du Jeu de Paume is particularly easy and pleasant. The Monnaie de Paris is located about a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hotel.

By metro:

  • Line 7 or 10: Pont Neuf or Odéon stop
  • Then about a 5- to 10-minute walk

Thanks to its prime location on Île Saint-Louis, the Hôtel du Jeu de Paume is the ideal starting point for exploring the treasures of historic Paris.

A true gem of Parisian heritage, the Monnaie de Paris is a must-see for all guests staying at the Hôtel du Jeu de Paume. Easily accessible on foot, it offers a unique immersion in history, art, and architecture in the heart of the capital.
