La Caverne du Pont Neuf
In the summer of 2026, Paris is set to host one of the most spectacular art installations of the decade: La Caverne du Pont Neuf, conceived by contemporary artist JR. From June 6 to 28, 2026, the capital’s oldest bridge will be completely transformed into a monumental immersive artwork, visible and accessible to the public free of charge.
Located in the heart of Paris, just steps from the Île de la Cité and the historic Marais district, this creation offers a unique cultural experience at the intersection of art, architecture, and sensory storytelling.
With La Caverne du Pont Neuf, JR presents a spectacular reinterpretation of the historic bridge built between 1578 and 1607. The installation takes the form of a large-scale immersive structure, evoking a contemporary urban cave.
Inspired by the limestone quarries used to build Paris, the work covers the bridge with a monumental cladding that creates the illusion of a rock formation. This transformation aims to create a dialogue between the capital’s architectural past and a contemporary artistic vision focused on emotion and the perception of reality.
The artist explains that he wants to invite the public to “rethink what is familiar to them,” in the tradition of major urban art installations that question our relationship to public space.
La Caverne du Pont Neuf is more than just a visual installation. It offers a truly immersive sensory experience:
- A pedestrian walkway through the heart of a monumental tunnel
- An original soundscape composed by Thomas Bangalter (formerly of Daft Punk)
- Visual and narrative effects inspired by chronophotography
- An augmented reality experience developed with Snap Inc.
- Thanks to these elements, visitors become active participants in their own journey. The installation transforms the simple crossing of the Pont Neuf into an introspective journey, blending illusion, perception, and augmented reality.
This work pays tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who had already made their mark on the history of the Pont Neuf in 1985 with their famous project to wrap the bridge.
Forty years later, JR continues this artistic legacy by offering a new interpretation of the Parisian monument. Where Christo revealed the bridge’s form, JR proposes a radical metamorphosis: transforming it into a cavern, somewhere between fictional nature and reinvented architecture.
During its run, La Caverne du Pont Neuf will establish itself as a major cultural event in Paris. Accessible 24/7, the installation will attract both Parisians and international visitors.
For travelers staying at the Hôtel du Jeu de Paume, located on Île Saint-Louis, the experience will be particularly accessible: the bridge is just a few minutes’ walk away, in the heart of one of the capital’s most iconic and historic neighborhoods.
