The building owes its name to Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, a minister under Henry IV, who acquired the property in the 17th century. Over the centuries, the mansion underwent various transformations before becoming the headquarters of the Centre des monuments nationaux.

Upon entering, the richness of the sculpted decorations immediately catches the eye. The facades are adorned with numerous allegorical figures representing, in particular, the four elements and the four seasons, reflecting the architectural refinement of the early 17th century.

One of the great pleasures of visiting the Hôtel de Sully is walking through its courtyard and then its garden to reach the Place des Vosges directly.

After passing through the archway on Rue Saint-Antoine, you’ll discover an elegant cobblestone courtyard before taking the central path that leads to the garden. Restored in 2023, the garden offers a peaceful atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the neighboring streets.

The courtyard and garden of the Hôtel de Sully are open to the public free of charge every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The interior is usually closed to the public, but certain guided tours offer the opportunity to explore the building’s interior spaces.

From the Hôtel du Jeu de Paume, the Hôtel de Sully is easily accessible on foot. Cross the Seine toward the Marais, then head to Rue Saint-Antoine. The entrance to the Hôtel de Sully is located at 62 Rue Saint-Antoine, near Place des Vosges.
You can also take the metro: the Bastille (lines 1, 5, and 8) and Saint-Paul (line 1) stations are located near the monument.
