An immersive exhibition at the Army Museum in Paris

From April 15 through August 16, 2026, the Musée de l’Armée, located at Les Invalides in Paris, will present a special exhibition titled “Explorations: A Matter of State?” This exhibition invites visitors to journey back in time through three centuries of French expeditions, exploring the intersections of science, strategy, and political ambition.

This unique exhibition traces the great French explorations from the 18th century to the present day, highlighting their key role in national history. Through a rich exhibition design blending archives, scientific artifacts, works of art, and personal accounts, visitors get a behind-the-scenes look at these extraordinary expeditions.

From the discovery of new territories to scientific conquest, via colonial ambitions and contemporary explorations (oceans, space), the exhibition reveals how these missions shaped France’s power and influence across the globe.

More than a simple historical retrospective, “Explorations: A Matter of State?” questions the true motivations behind these great expeditions. Was it a quest for knowledge or a tool for domination and international influence?

The exhibition highlights:

  • The central role of the state in organizing explorations
  • The military’s involvement in scientific missions
  • The geopolitical and technological challenges associated with these expeditions
  • The links between exploration and sovereignty

A fascinating perspective that resonates with contemporary issues and new forms of exploration.
